I am aware of that the main idea is about seeking for self-identity from the public and the people who suffer it themselves. The main character turned to God when he can't face himself and tried to find a way to fit in the community. He used God to hide the truth from the public as well as himself. His tears made the confession even more convincing. He is a user, and a taker, as john said. But so is everyone. None of them is a good Christian. What they really do is trying to find an excuse to be forgiven.
"when everyone abandons you, what are you left with? You are left with God, and God only. You may lose your body, you may lose your mind, but you will always, always have your soul. I don't know about you, but that makes me pretty happy."
However these words made me feel related. If there is God, I'd really pray for happiness.Yet, "religion is meant for people who aren't smart enough to understand how the world really works" and I am one of them.
