老人艾文（西摩·卡塞尔 Seymour Cassel 饰）身患绝症时日无多，悲观又抑郁的她决定放弃治疗，孤单一人在医院里等待死亡的降临。可是，这一计划的实施却并不简单，新来的年轻病友凯文（约翰尼·威特沃斯 Johnny Whitworth 饰）让艾文陷入了复杂的境地中。虽然凯文也身患重病，但乐观的他不仅没有感到痛苦，反而天天带着女友莎拉（莱西·沙伯特 Lacey Chabert 饰）在病房里大玩特玩，不胜其烦的艾文决定离“院”出走，重新寻找安静的死地。 离开医院后，一个新的世界展现在了艾文的眼前，她结识了名叫伊芙琳（阿尔法·沃德 Alfre Woodard 饰）的坚强女子，两人之间产生了真挚的感情。通过伊芙琳的开导和鼓励，艾文终于明白，什么才是生命中最珍贵的东西。
Alvin is a cantankerous old man in a hospice facility, trying to stay amused while he faces his inevitable end. He has memories of a wife he never knew how to love. As he gets to know his roommate Kevin, a young man with terminal cancer, he begins to reconsider what he has left in life. To everyone's surprise including himself, Alvin begins to embrace his final days when he falls in love with a woman who is also dying.
